Assemblyman Robert Smullen has announced his support for Assembly Bill A.2534, a legislative proposal aimed at expanding access to healthcare in New York state. The bill seeks to authorize pharmacists to initiate treatment for COVID-19, influenza, and pharyngitis upon receiving a positive test result.
Smullen emphasized the importance of allowing licensed pharmacists to provide initial treatment, stating that it would help ensure more people receive necessary care. He remarked, “Creating more flexibility and accessibility within our state’s health care system will not only improve public health and well-being in our communities, but it will also help promote rural equity statewide.”
The assemblyman highlighted the challenges faced by residents in rural areas where access to quality healthcare and primary care providers is often limited. This can make it difficult for individuals to obtain medical orders or prescriptions. Smullen believes that bridging this gap through collaboration between the commissioner of health and pharmacists is a practical approach to improving the state’s healthcare system.
