Cost of attending SUNY Oneonta decreases for all students in 2022-23 school year

The most recent figures reveal that in-state tuition at SUNY Oneonta declined by 0.1% for the 2022-23 school year, according to the latest disclosure from the National Center for Education Statistics.

New York residents paid $8,775 to attend the four-year public university this year, which is $11 less than the $8,786 charged during the 2021-22 academic year.

Non-resident students were charged 112.9% more than residents in 2022-23, paying $18,685. This represents a 0.1% decrease from the $18,696 tuition fee in the previous year.

Approximately 98% of the undergraduate student body at SUNY Oneonta are New York residents, while about 1% come from other states.

Data indicates that 90% of full-time undergraduates who enrolled at SUNY Oneonta in 2022-23 received some form of financial aid. A total of 864 students were awarded grants or scholarships amounting to $8 million, and 728 students secured loans exceeding $5.5 million.

Among all undergraduates, 3,431 students received grants or scholarships totaling $32 million. Additionally, 2,721 students borrowed $16.9 million in federal student loans.

Undergraduate education costs have seen a significant increase over the past few decades. Data shows a 169% rise in the average total cost, including tuition, fees, room, and board, between 1980 and 2020.

According to a 2023 College Board report, in-state students at public universities paid an average of $11,260, while out-of-state students paid $29,150 in the 2023-24 academic year.

Meanwhile, student loan debt has steadily increased over the last 30 years, reaching $1.75 trillion in 2024, averaging a total of $28,950 per borrower. Federal loans make up 92% of the debt, with over half of students at both public and private four-year colleges graduating with student loans.
