According to U.S. Census Bureau estimates, the country’s older adult population has continued to rise while numbers among younger Americans decline. From 2020 to 2024, the 65-and-older age group grew by 13%, whereas the under-18 population fell by 1.7%. Nationally, the older adult population has increased significantly in the past 100 years, from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million in 2024.
A 2021 study found that nearly half of Americans in this group—about 28 million people—may need long-term services and supports, with projections that more than one-third may require nursing home care over time.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
