Estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau indicate the older adult population in the U.S. continues to rise as younger cohorts decrease. From 2020 to 2024, Americans 65 and older grew by 13%, while those under age 18 declined by 1.7%. The country’s older demographic has seen rapid growth over the last century, expanding from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million by 2024.
A 2021 analysis found that about half of older Americans, or roughly 28 million people, are likely to need long-term services and supports. The report also predicts that more than a third may eventually require nursing home care.
