Assemblyman Robert Smullen hosted a picnic honoring veterans at the Concordia Club in Gloversville on September 4, 2025. The event drew more than 500 veterans and guests from the 118th Assembly District and included participation from state and local leaders such as Assemblyman Joseph Angelino and Assemblyman Matt Simpson.
“It was a privilege to organize this picnic and share a meal with so many courageous veterans living right here in the 118th Assembly District,” said Smullen. “Events like this are a great way to bring the community together and show our undying gratitude, respect and support for those who risked everything to keep us all safe. As a retired U.S. Marine Corps colonel who served three combat tours in Afghanistan, I had the opportunity to meet and get to know countless men and women on active duty. It was an honor to serve alongside them while working together to safeguard our national security.”
During the event, Smullen presented a proclamation to Peter Tautznik of Fulton County, who served in both the U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard, achieving the rank of senior master sergeant. Tautznik received several military honors during his career, including Air Force Commendation medals, Air Force Achievement medals, Longevity Service awards, National Defense Service medals, Outstanding Unit awards, Humane Service to New York State medals, and Long and Faithful Service awards.
“I was proud to present a proclamation to Peter Tautznik alongside my fellow assemblymembers,” Smullen continued. “Peter’s leadership, courage and unwavering commitment to serving our nation and the Mohawk Valley throughout his life are deserving of recognition. Peter, we thank you for your service.
“Special thanks to the Concordia Club for hosting our picnic, to Paul Catucci for collecting donations to help support our veterans and to all of the phenomenal volunteers who helped make this event a success. We must all do our part to give back and give thanks to those who served and continue to play a significant role in our Assembly District 118 community. To every veteran in attendance and others throughout our state and country: We thank you for your service and sacrifice.”
