City of Amsterdam recently issued the following announcement
Event: Pumpkin Smash 2020 Drop-Off Only
When: November 7, 2020
“Don’t Trash it, Smash it at Home” We're encouraging virtual smashing parties - send us videos on Facebook @growamsterdamny where you clobber your pumpkin at home, and bring us the remains (sounds spooky).
Let's continue to divert pumpkins from the Landfill!
We'll also collect un-smashed pumpkins, jack-o-lanterns, corn stalks, and straw bales too!
Please remove all decorations and candles.
Pumpkins will be composted by the Compost Works Initiative @ Grow Amsterdam NY - by composting your pumpkins you are keeping organic waste out of the landfills, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and creating compost, a natural fertilizer, for the Esperanza Verde, the city's new park at
285 East Main St.
Why Keep Pumpkins Out of the Landfill?
Composting is nature’s way of recycling with many benefits:
- Avoids landfill greenhouse gas emissions from decomposing organics (currently, landfills are the 3rd largest producers of methane in the U.S.!)
- Produces a useful, nutrient-dense soil amendment
- Pumpkins are 90% water which is great for our soil, not so good in our landfills
