The City of Amsterdam is undertaking a Brownfield Opportunity Area (BOA) Nomination Study which looks at existing conditions, opportunities, and reuse potential for properties within the West End study area. The Brownfield Opportunity Area (BOA) program, operated by the New York State Department of State (NYSDOS), provides municipalities and community-based organizations with the tools and the structure to reactivate neighborhoods impacted by the existence of brownfields. Brownfields are abandoned, vacant, or underutilized properties that may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of environmental contamination.

The West End neighborhood is a main gateway into the western half of the City. The project area is approximately 158-acres, with portions as a former manufacturing area, and is expected to contain approximately 22 perceived underutilized or vacant properties. During 2011, the West End was affected by Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee, and again in 2012 by Superstorm Sandy. These three extreme weather events caused extensive damage and left formerly occupied buildings empty. Since then, instances of vacant buildings have deteriorated further and eventually demolished. The Nomination Study will analyze existing conditions, opportunities, and reuse potential for properties within the study area. The study will focus on identification and reuse of strategic sites to spark revitalization and a designation of the area by the Secretary of State.

Please join us at the first public workshop to help us develop a vision for the West End together! Public Workshop #1 will be held on April 1, 2023, at St. Mary’s Healthcare, Carondelet Pavilion Auditorium, 480 Guy Park Avenue from 10:00 AM - 12:30 PM. The workshop will start with a bus tour of the study area (leaving at 10:30 AM) and there will be an open house with interactive stations following the bus tour. Snacks and kid-friendly activities will be available. The workshop is open to all. Additional workshops will be held in the Spring/Summer and Fall.
