2022-23 FFCS Winter Sports Season Recap!!

The weather might have been cold, but the FFCS winter sports teams kept up the heat in competition. From indoor track and basketball to everything in between – FFCS competed hard and showcased their talents this season. Without delay, here’s the recap for the 2022-23 winter season. Special thanks to all of the coaches and families for providing their season reviews and photos.

What an amazing season for the Fonda-Fultonville indoor track team this season! Were school records broken? Check! League champions announced? Definitely! Sectional champions? Fonda-Fultonville had it all! A special thank you to Coach Rajkowski for breaking down all of the successes from this year’s indoor track season!

League Champions – Girls & Boys

State Championship

Ty Sanges and Exavier Garcia finished third in public schools and placed fourth in federations at the NYSPHSAA Championships in the intersectional relay.

Varsity Boys Basketball

The Fonda-Fultonville Boys Basketball put together a winning campaign record of 19 wins and four losses. With big wins over Gloversville, Watervliet, ND-BG, and Cohoes, along with a 14-game win streak, this was a fun-filled season. Special shout-out to this year’s All-Stars: Jackson Cusack – 1st Team and Class B All-Tournament Team; Brady Whipple – 1st Team and Nate Mycek – Honorable Mention. This season also marked the most wins in program history since 2010! This year’s team also made a strong run at the Class B Semifinals at Cool Insuring Arena in Glens Falls, N.Y. 2022-23 Roster: Roger Boyer – Sr., Nate Mycek -Sr., Jackson Cusack – Sr., Brady Whipple – Sr., Jeremiah Jimenez – Sr., Matthew Clifford – Sr., Colin McLaughlin – Jr., Matheu Dettenrieder – Jr., Logan Miller – Jr., Aidan Frederick – Jr., Brady Melious – Jr. and Riley Wilson – Fr.

FFCS Lady Braves Basketball

For the 2022-23 hoops season, the FFCS Lady Braves posted an overall record of 14-8 (10-3 WAC). They placed third in the Hudson Division and second overall in the WAC. They established a successful season with key wins over Mayfield (#6 in the state rankings for Class C) and knocked off #5 seed Greenville in the first round of sectionals as a #12 seed. This team was ranked #25 in the Class B NYSPHSAA rankings for the week beginning on 2/14. Key Departures: Senior Guard/Forward Quincy Lake; Senior Guard Elinor Slezak, Senior Guard/Forward Maddy Mott, Senior Guard/Forward Colleen Chest, Senior Guard/Forward Emma Crahan.

Season Recognitions: First team WAC All-Star: Quincy Lake. Second team WAC All-Star: Kieonna Christmas. Nominated by players and coaches awards: Top rebounder: Kieonna Christmas; Top defender: Maddy Mott; Coach’s award: Emma Crahan; UBUNTU award: Samara Hunt; Jennifer Freeman Memorial MVP: Quincy Lake.  The 2022-23 team showed grit and determination from the very first day of tryouts through the end of the season!

Wrestling

The 2022-2023 wrestling season was a successful one for the Fonda-Johnstown Wrestling team. Success was found both as a team and individually. As a team, Fonda-Johnstown secured the WAC League Championship, finished fourth as a team at the Class CC Sectionals, and placed fifth at the Section 2 Division II State qualifiers. Individually, this year’s team had 11 wrestlers place at the Section 2 Class CC Championships and qualified six wrestlers to compete at the Section 2 State qualifying tournament in Glens Falls. From there, Owen Hicks and Jonathan Cranker both qualified for the NYS Championships, where Owen Hicks finished the season and his career with a second-place finish.

Bowling

The Fonda-Fultonville Bowling Team came in second place in the WAC and ended up ninth out of 21 teams at Section II. Special recognition goes to Tomek Kowalczyk who was named a first-team All-Star, as well as Anthony Cannizzaro and Devin Humphrey getting second-team All-Star honors in the WAC. Faith Coleman also received second-team All-Star honors in the WAC.
