Alexander John “AJ” Smullen Was Kind, Clever and Courageous

Albany, New York - The community mourns the loss of Alexander John “AJ” Smullen, a 14-year-old who passed away at Albany Medical Center on March 6, 2024, following a tragic accident. AJ, as he was affectionately known, was described by his loved ones as a kind, clever, and courageous old soul who always provided a helping hand and witty retort.

AJ's family, friends, and community remember him for his generosity and spirit. He participated in the New York State Donate Life program, giving the ultimate gift to those in need. His selfless act touched the lives of many.

A Coca-Cola-loving eighth grader at Mayfield Jr./Sr. High School, AJ had dreams of attending forestry school and taking over the family farm. He was passionate about homesteading, enjoyed activities like four-wheeling and hunting for artifacts, and had a knack for antiquing. An artist and amateur banjo player, AJ was also a member of various local clubs and organizations, showcasing his diverse interests and talents.

To honor AJ's memory, calling hours and a funeral service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Johnstown, New York, on March 9. Reverend Laurie Garramone will officiate the ceremony, providing a space for family and close friends to celebrate AJ's life.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Pine Tree Rifle Club’s “Alexander John Smullen Memorial Scholarship” or to organizations close to AJ's heart. Condolences and memories can be shared via email with the family.

The passing of Alexander John “AJ” Smullen leaves a void in the hearts of many, but his legacy of kindness, cleverness, and courage will continue to inspire those who knew him.
