Albany, Mar 18 2024 - As the debate over budget allocations continues, Assemblyman Smullen, Minority Ranker of the Higher Education Committee, highlighted the crucial need for increased funding for institutions of higher learning, specifically SUNY and CUNY schools.

Smullen emphasized the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on colleges and universities across the state, stating, "Many colleges and universities statewide were hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic and continued outmigration, and are in need of additional funds to financially recover."

Expressing the importance of supporting SUNY and CUNY schools in maintaining their facilities and providing quality education, Smullen stressed, "Our SUNY and CUNY schools deserve our support to maintain their facilities and continue to provide the best educational opportunities possible."

Furthermore, Smullen highlighted the necessity of investing in the future generation without burdening taxpayers, stating, "We need to invest in our children’s futures and avoid doing so at taxpayers’ expense."

Looking ahead, Smullen expressed optimism regarding the upcoming FY2024-25 State Budget, hoping that it will align with the goals of ensuring adequate funding for higher education institutions.
