Veteran Robert L. Fish honored for lifelong dedication to military and community service

Robert L. Fish has dedicated his entire adult life to service, wearing the uniforms of the United States Marine Corps, New York Army National Guard, and New York Air National Guard. He achieved the rank of Sergeant E-5.

His commitment to the welfare and security of others extended into a career in law enforcement and participation in multiple volunteer fire rescue squads.

Mr. Fish began his service with the U.S. Marine Corps in June 1997. After completing training, he was stationed with the 2nd Battalion 8th Marines, undertaking assignments in Japan and South Korea as part of Operation Freedom and Foal Eagle. His subsequent deployments included Panama for security at the Panama Canal and Greece for a NATO/Maritime Pre-Positioning exercise.

Following his time with the Marine Corps, Mr. Fish joined the New York Army National Guard after the events of September 11, 2001. His duties included security in New York City, direct support for Operation Enduring Freedom 5 in Afghanistan, and overseeing security and route clearing for Afghanistan’s National Highway.

Mr. Fish later enlisted in the New York Air National Guard and served at Stratton ANG Base in Schenectady as an Airport Crash Fire Rescue Fire Fighter. He was activated and stationed in Kuwait to support Operation Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.

Throughout his service, Mr. Fish received numerous awards including the Army Commendation Award, Air Force Meritorious Unit Award, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Air Reserve Forces Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense Medal, New York State Conspicuous Service Star, New York State Defense of Liberty Medal, and the New York State Meritorious Service Medal.

After his military career, Mr. Fish spent 17 years with the Broome County Sheriff’s Office and continues to serve as a School Resource Officer with the Chenango Forks School District.

Mr. Fish's unwavering commitment to his nation, fellow service members, and community merits respect and admiration.
