Assemblyman Robert Smullen has announced that eight public libraries in Assembly District 118 will receive approximately $459,182 in state aid for construction projects. The funds are part of the $34 million allocated in the FY2023-2024 State Budget for public library construction and broadband infrastructure.

The funding will support various projects, including roof replacement, installation of alternative energy resources, new HVAC systems, windows, doors, lighting systems, electrical upgrades, electric vehicle charging stations, standby generators, and parking lot construction or replacement. Broadband infrastructure projects are also eligible.

Smullen expressed his satisfaction with the allocation: “I am pleased to see these libraries receive much-needed funding from the state for upgrades and renovation projects.” He highlighted the age of many library buildings across New York and their need for updates to better serve communities.

A survey revealed a significant need for library construction and renovation in New York State totaling over $1.75 billion. More than half of the state's public library buildings are over 60 years old; another third exceed 30 years. Many libraries face challenges such as accessibility issues for users with disabilities, energy inefficiency, outdated wiring preventing internet access and electronic technology use, insufficient space for collections or meeting areas.

Smullen added his support: “I fully support the allocation of these funds to our public libraries, and I am very excited to see the planned renovation projects completed.”

Looking ahead to FY2024-2025 State Budget allocations, an additional $44 million has been earmarked for similar projects to be announced in summer 2025. This represents a $10 million increase from the previous year’s budget.
