Wells Nursing Home, Inc. became the county’s second largest nursing home during the first quarter of 2026, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) reported.

Records show the facility offered 100 beds, which is 20 fewer than the county’s average bed count for that quarter. It served an average of 90.4 residents per day in the period measured.

CMS assigned an overall quality rating of 1 out of 5 to Wells Nursing Home, Inc., below the 3.1 average for New York state nursing homes.

Fulton Center for Rehabilitation and Healthcare maintained the top spot in size with 176 beds, while Nathan Littauer Hospital Nursing Home followed Wells in third at 84 beds available.

As of the same quarter, Wells Nursing Home, Inc. was cited for one fine totaling $8,512 and incurred one penalty.

There were two non-profit nursing homes in Fulton County, New York in total.

U.S. Census Bureau estimates indicate that the number of older adults nationally continues to rise while the number of children has declined. From 2020 to 2024, America’s 65-plus population climbed by 13%, while the population under 18 dropped by 1.7%. Since 1920, the older adult population has increased sharply, reaching over 61 million by 2024 from just 4.9 million a century earlier.

A 2021 study shows that about half the older population—approximately 28 million people—may need long-term services and supports, with more than one-third expected to require nursing home care eventually.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
