Assemblyman Robert Smullen, representing the Mohawk Valley and the Adirondacks, participated in a press conference on April 8, 2025, in Albany. The event was organized to mark Donate Life Month in New York state. Smullen, joined by other assembly members, senators, and representatives from Donate Life New York State, spoke about the significance of organ donation.
The assemblyman shared the story of his son, Alexander John “AJ” Smullen, who became an organ donor after his death in March 2024, benefiting five families. This personal experience underscores the ongoing need for organ donors, as approximately 8,000 individuals in New York are awaiting transplants. Annually, many die because a suitable donor is not available.
Smullen urged New Yorkers to consider registering with Donate Life New York State, emphasizing the importance of expanding the donor pool. “Through our family’s tragedy, five other families were given hope,” said Smullen. “My son is a hero who continues to inspire and touch people’s lives each and every day. We miss him tremendously, but we know his sacrifice was not in vain. This month, I encourage every New Yorker to register as an organ, eye or tissue donor and participate in the Donate Life New York State program to help save as many lives as possible. Let us do everything we can to increase the donor pool each year and save other New York families from tragedy.”
The press conference included a call-to-action for the public to join the cause by registering as organ donors.
