Delaware County’s historic covered bridges are weight posted at 3 tons, or 6,000 pounds. Quite a few common vehicles easily surpass this weight limit, and even more surpass it when vehicles are loaded. Check out the image below to see if you make the list, and then double check your vehicle’s weight by following the instructions we discussed in a previous post.
Also, 3 tons, or 6,000 pounds is used in tax code identifying vehicles eligible for Section 179 business deduction. So, if you deduct your vehicle in your tax filings under Section 179, it’s too heavy to cross our covered bridges.
All our historic bridges do have alternate routes, so please plan ahead.
Help us protect and preserve our historic bridges for generations to come by being mindful of posted weight limits and knowing your own weight. It’s also important to note that some non-historic bridges are also weight posted, and by choosing alternate routes when necessary, drivers are helping to protect critical, costly infrastructure from damage. All weight posted bridges have proper signage noting weight limits.
