Delaware County Department of Public Works - Is That Item Labeled Recyclable Actually Recyclable?

Is that item labeled recyclable actually recyclable? According to the article below and our own expert experience, it may not be recyclable despite labeling indicating otherwise.

Unfortunately, while labeling on the package may say to recycle, many items are not recyclable, at least through the SWMC. Items such as plastic utensils, film plastics like plastic bags, and Styrofoam are not recyclable at our facility. This may not necessarily mean they cannot be recycled; we just can’t process them at the SWMC and they will end up in the landfill.

So, what can you do to help? If something has a recycling label on it, but you’re not certain it can be recycled, check out our website or give us a call. Otherwise, put it in your household garbage-when in doubt, throw it out. This protects our equipment from damage, reduces labor, and protects valuable recyclables from contamination by non-recyclable materials.

If you want to go a step further, reduce non-recyclable item purchasing or return recyclables to appropriate locations, such as film plastics to retailers’ bins or send items to companies like TerraCycle US.
