The Delaware County Department of Public Works Sign Shop's most common reason for sign replacement is theft. Please don't take road signs. Not cool (or safe).
The second most common reason for sign replacement is UV deterioration of the reflective surface. Our Sign Shop crew verifies retro-reflectivity by viewing our field placed signs during the early morning hours, when lighting is most challenging.
Retro-reflectivity is the reflective nature of the signs that ensures that when the sign is illuminated by a vehicle's headlights, the bounce back reflection comes back to the driver's eye.
There are three types of pressure sensitive vinyl sheeting used for sign making.
1: High Intensity Prismatic sheeting is used to make retro-reflective signs.
2: Diamond Grade sheeting provides a lower level of reflectivity.
3: Engineering Grade sheeting is the lowest level of reflectivity used for non-critical signs.
Take a look at the road signs the next time you're driving at night. Can you tell the difference?
