State Senator Peter Oberacker (R/C – Schenevus) announced today that legislation (S.6798) he sponsors to streamline court proceedings in Delaware, Otsego, and Schoharie counties has been approved by the state senate.

“During the COVID-19 pandemic, a number of policies were instituted in order to adhere to social distancing guidelines,” said Senator Oberacker. “One policy that proved advantageous was the use of virtual arraignments for court proceedings. This bill will allow Otsego, Delaware, and Schoharie counties to utilize this technology at their discretion moving forward.”

Senator Oberacker’s legislation permits Delaware, Otsego, and Schoharie counties to join thirty-seven other counties across the state that have been granted the authority to conduct arraignments electronically.

“Our rural police departments and courts are stretched incredibly thin and any policy change that helps with efficiency has my full support. I speak with our local sheriffs and county officials on a regular basis as we work together to formulate policies that will meet the needs of those we represent and this is an idea that they favor,” added Senator Oberacker.

Companion legislation (A.6738) sponsored by Assemblyman Chris Tague was previously approved. The bill must now be signed by the governor to become law.

“Permitting the use of virtual arraignments will save taxpayers money, help streamline court proceedings and allow our police to focus on other job responsibilities keeping the public safe,” concluded Senator Oberacker.
