Delaware County is home to Camp Shankitunk, one of New York State's premier overnight camping experiences for youth. Located in Delhi, the 4-H camp offers various opportunities for children to learn about nature, life skills, and social skills while participating in enjoyable activities with friends.
Camp Shankitunk has become a generational tradition for many families and is fully booked for the upcoming summer. To ensure the smooth operation of all camp activities and sessions, the Delaware County Cornell Cooperative Extension is seeking qualified individuals to serve as camp counselors. Available positions include cabin counselors and kitchen help.
Cabin counselors are responsible for living, eating, playing, dancing, singing, and supervising 8-25 campers aged 8-16 throughout the summer. Their duties include maintaining bunk cleanliness and monitoring campers' personal hygiene and mealtime habits to ensure their health and happiness. The role requires qualities such as patience, fairness, playfulness, willingness to participate, compassion, and excellent listening skills.
"Camp counselors can have a profound impact on the campers they lead," said a spokesperson from Delaware County Cornell Cooperative Extension. "It is a position that demands incredible responsibility and care, but it’s also one of the most rewarding experiences you’ll ever have."
The counselor position is an on-site role from Sunday to Friday with provided sleeping quarters in cabins shared with youth. Meals are also provided. Salaries range from $1,200-$2,700 based on experience, certifications, responsibilities, and availability.
Additionally, there are openings for kitchen aides. Interested individuals can find applications and employment information on the camp's website at https://campshankitunk.org/staff.
Delaware County encourages those seeking a fulfilling summer experience to consider this opportunity while enjoying a longstanding local tradition.
