Delaware County has announced a State of Emergency and a county-wide burn ban due to dry conditions, effective from 12:00 PM on October 25, 2024. The decision was made by Chairman Tina Molé under New York State Executive Law, Article 2-B, Section 24. This measure aims to prevent wildfires as the region faces an extended period without rainfall.

The ban prohibits all forms of open burning, including campfires, brush piles, burn barrels, woodstove ash dumping, leaf/yard debris burning, and the use of torches or any device with an open flame. The public is urged to comply with this order as violations are considered a Class B misdemeanor under NYS Executive Law.

Chairman Molé stated that the lack of precipitation has created "abnormally dry environmental conditions," which pose a significant wildfire risk. She emphasized that the ban will remain in place until further notice.

In addition to addressing fire risks, Delaware County expressed condolences for a recent death reported in the area and reminded residents to continue practicing COVID-19 safety measures like social distancing and wearing masks.
