Assemblyman Robert Smullen, representing the Mohawk Valley and the Adirondacks, hosted a press conference on December 20, 2024, at the Fulton County Regional Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Gloversville. During this event, Smullen and his wife Megan announced a $50,000 matching gift to support the SPCA's relocation to a new shelter site. This donation honors their late son, Alexander John “AJ” Smullen.

“This cause is very close to our hearts,” stated Smullen. “My son had an incredible bond with his dogs, and I can’t think of a better way to honor his memory than by helping the Fulton County Regional SPCA build a brighter future for animals in our community. I encourage everyone to join me in this effort and turn $50,000 into $100,000 by donating in his name.”

The matching campaign has no set end date. Every contribution made in AJ's honor will be matched up to $50,000, effectively doubling the impact of each donation. Contributions can be made online or sent by mail to P.O. Box 1274, Gloversville, NY 12078.
